Because I Love You!

“Why did I agree to this?” She mumbled under her breath as she stumbled for the umpteenth time.  Her fingers caught in the damp ground, dirt forging its way under her pristine manicure.

“How ya doing?” Her partner called, far too chipper for this early in the morning.

“Fine,” she lied, trudging along, wishing they had at least stopped for coffee first.

When she came along beside him, he leaned down, kissing her sweaty cheek.  “Almost there.”

Arriving at the spot he proclaimed to be “the best”, he opened his backpack to a treasure trove of things. He helped her sit on a blanket he placed on the cold grass, then wrapped her in another.  Settling in beside her he grabbed 2 mugs and filled them from an enormous thermos.

Inhaling the smell of her favorite hazelnut latte as the steam rose into the air, she watched as he pulled out a lemon scone from her favorite bakery. Yum!

“Look”, he said, pointing out in front of them with one arm as he wrapped his other around her, snugging her in tight to the warmth of his body.

Her breath caught on an inhale as she saw the sun start to crest in the distance.  Breathtaking.  That was the only word that came to mind as she drank her coffee, cuddled her favorite person and watched the sun start to rise over the city.

“Thank you,” he whispered quietly, placing a kiss on her temple and pulling her in closer.

CoffeeMugStories™

Along with writing novels, I write flash fiction…
Each story is exactly 250 words and I call them Coffee Mug Stories™
because they’re small enough to fit on the side of your mug of coffee (or tea),
and short enough to read while you take your first few sips in the morning.
They’re unedited, little thoughts, just to make you smile.
