We’ve Got This! – A Coffee Mug Story™

Along with writing novels, I write flash fiction…

Each story is exactly 250 words and I call them Coffee Mug Stories™

because they’re small enough to fit on the side of your mug of coffee (or tea),

and short enough to read while you take your first few sips in the morning.

The title of today’s story is “We’ve Got This!”

We’ve Got This!

“I hate you! “The sounds of little feet stomping away were drowned out by the clangs of the old dishwasher in the corner.

“My turn,” the husband said softly, laying a hand on his wife’s shoulder.

“Hey Little Man.” The father said softly as he walked into his son’s bedroom and saw him curled up on the bed, tears drying on his face. He sat on the bed and pulled his son into his arms, cuddling him against his chest. The father cherished these moments, even with the tears, loving that he could hold this amazing little human, and knowing it wouldn’t always be like this. It wouldn’t be long before cuddles would be a thing of the past and he’d be lucky to get a fist bump.

“I know we said we’d go to Disney World, but we can’t right now.”

“You promised,” tears pooled in his son’s eyes as he looked up.

“I know, and we will some day, but not this year.” His heart broke; feelings of failure flooded through him at having to deny this little boy anything. They were finally crawling their way out of debt. Maybe next year.

Hours later, after dinner, bath, story time, and paying bills, he sat down beside his wife on the couch. Her knees were curled up to her chest, her arms wrapped around them as she stared sightlessly at the muted tv. He pulled her close and placed a kiss on her head. “We’ve got this”, he said.

Until next time…..
